Fabrics Glossary

All of the fabric used by ZENASWIMWEAR is first quality lycra.  Most of the fabrics that are available are standard nylon lycra, which is standard swimwear fabric. All of our fabrics include lycra or spandex which are the fibers within the fabric that allow it to be stretchy yet retain its shape and support.   The following , are some notes that might be of interest to you as you select your swimsuit fabric.

Chlorine Resistant Fabrics.

From our years of experience we have found that there really is not such a thing as Chlorine Resistant Fabric.  Some fabrics last longer, but no fabric can hold up to the rigors of chlorine and salt water.  Chlorine is liken to soaking a piece of fabric in bleach.  The result of chlorine on swimwear is about the same.  Swimwear fades.  Our solid Tricot lycra fabrics are "chlorine resistant" fabrics and will retain their color much longer than any print fabric.

Metallic Fabrics.

We offer a number of metallic fabrics.  Metallic fabrics are nylon lycra with a metallic overlay.  These overlays have gotten stronger over the years but are still subject to flaking and dulling.   Special care should be given to these suits which are made more for their look and less for their durability.

Neon Prints and Solids.

Neon and bright colored fabrics (orange, yellow, lime green, hot pink) fade quicker than any other fabric.   They are the most sensitive to sunlight of all the fabrics.

Velvets.  Occasionally we offer velvet fabrics for swimwear.  These fabrics are beautiful and unique swimwear fabrics.  But a word of warning, they soak up a lot of water when wet.

Snags.

Nylon lycra fabric snags.  Use care when sitting along the side of a pool.  If a snag occurs, DO NOT PULL IT.   Gently cut it off and apply a tiny drop of clear nail polish.  The nail polish might show slightly, but that would be a lot better than having a huge hole appear.

4-Way and 2 Way Stretch.  Most all of the fabric we use are 4-way stretch which mean that it stretches up-down, side to side, and at all angles.  We find that 4 way fabrics fit the best.  2-Way fabrics stretch across the body, but have limited stretch up-and-down.

White and Other Light Colored Fabrics.  No matter what you line a white suit with it will be slightly see through.  Yellows, light blues, light pinks and lavenders are also a problem.  Use your judgment when ordering a suit in one of these colors.  If we are offering a light color fabric on our internet site it will be lined appropriately.  However, if you have very dark skin it still might be a problem.  As well, these fabric colors are the wrong choice for someone who swims in the ocean, lakes or streams.  These suits stain easily in muddy type water.
